Flat soldiers originate from medieval engraving and first appeared in Germany, where they are now one of the "national types" of collecting. The production and collecting of flat figures is also developed in France, Switzerland, Great Britain and of course in Russia. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the children of all high-ranking families throughout Europe played flat soldiers.
