The soldier is dressed in chain mail, a coarse green cloak and a bronze helmet, reinforced with transverse stiffeners. He is armed with a spear, a short sword - a gladius and an oval flat shield. Auxiliary foot soldiers (auxiliaries) were usually recruited in the Rhine provinces and therefore wore trousers, which the citizens of Rome considered barbarian clothing.
