The legion of the period of the republic, numbering 4200 people, was divided into ten cohorts. The cohort included a maniple of triarii (60 people), a maniple of principles (120 people) and a maniple of hastati (120 people), as well as 120 people of velites. Each maniple consisted of two centuries. In battle, the maniple centuria fought together.
